Hello, I am Michael Barrs.  I am excited to have the oppotunity to work with you at The Carol Morgan School as the Physical Education Department Head, 9th Grade PE/Health Teacher, and Weight Training Coach.  This will be my second year at CMS and my tenth year as a professional educator.   My previous international school experience was in Guatemala, where I served as an Assistant Principal at Colegio Interamericano.  I have also taught Comprehensive Science at the Middle School level.  Prior to teaching, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uganda, East Africa.  I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and my Master’s Degree from the University of South Florida.  My hobbies include traveling, camping, surfing, biking, and playing sports.  I am pleased to have the opportunity to help you excel in your studies and achieve your best.  Should you have questions you may contact me at mbarrs@cms.edu.do .

Statement of Purpose

The High School Physical and Health Education program will inspire students to achieve the benefits of an active and balanced lifestyle.  Exploration of activity and sport from around the world, instruction on effective athletic techniques, and empowerment in making healthy choices will provide a foundation from which students will excel in their lives.  Physical Education classes will strive to improve students’ strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination while teaching them the value of teamwork and rules and how these relate to society as a whole.  Health classes will focus on the Health Triangle, which includes Physical, Social, and Mental / Emotional Health.  Students will learn about topics related to personal and lifetime fitness such as: Personal Safety, Physical Fitness, Growth and Development, Nutrition, Personal Responsibility, Body Systems, Mental / Emotional Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases, Stress Management, and Environmental Health.

Our program is committed to teaching students the power of educated choices and the fun of activity, whether competitive or cooperative, team or individual. The key to success in this program is for the students to take responsibility for their choices.
